Vehicle dismantlers have effectively, been recycling vehicles for many years. Today, the percentage of a vehicle that can be recycled is extremely high with many vehicle manufacturers using the recycled component of new cars as a selling point. However, certain components or materials are regarded as special waste and need to be handled accordingly.

Higher recycling targets and treatment and disposal of non-recyclable wastes with be covered when the EU Directive on 'End of Life Vehicles' becomes UK law. To that end vehicles should always be sent for disposal to licensed dismantlers.
