bullet.gif (139 bytes)Kerbside recycling collection

From September 2003, the blue recycling bin fortnightly collection service will be extended borough wide. Two sizes of bin are available to residents: 140 litre or 240 litre. Residents are given calendars to remind them of their recycling collection day, which is the same as weekday as their regular refuse collection. Free clear plastic sacks are available if residents cannot accommodate a bin. Materials collected under the scheme include:
        *  All paper, magazines and cardboard
        *  Food and drinks cans
        *  Plastic bottles

A dedicated freighter picks up the recycling, which is kept completely separate from the refuse collection. To obtain more information or order a bin or sacks, please phone the Recycling Helpline on 01252 398164.

NB: Glass cannot be collected in kerbside recycling for health and safety reasons, and because broken glass contaminates the other recyclables. Please take your glass bottles and jars to your local bottle bank.

bullet.gif (139 bytes)Compost bins
Residents may add their names to a waiting list for a free, second hand composter. Alternatively, if householders would like to purchase a composter they can phone the Recycling Helpline (01252 398164) to find out about the latest composter offers.

bullet.gif (139 bytes)The Wastebusters Club!

Children's Club for 5 to 12-year-olds interested in finding out more about waste minimisation and recycling, along with wider environmental issues. Membership is free - members receive: a certificate, a badge and regular newsletters. Each newsletter contains recycling tips, ideas for things to make and do, news of other Wastebusters' achievements, and competitions.

bullet.gif (139 bytes)Bulky waste collections

Old furniture, cookers, refrigerators and other large household items can be collected under the Bulky Household Waste Collection scheme operated by Rushmoor Borough Council. A fee is made for using this service. Phone 01252 398889 to obtain further details and/or make a booking.

bullet.gif (139 bytes)'Real' nappy services

Consider 'real' nappies as an alternative to disposables. Call the Recycling Helpline on 01252 398164 for a free copy of the leaflet 'Nappies, the choice is yours.' Learn more about using real nappies by contacting the Real Nappy Association Nappyline on 01983 401959 or visit the website www.realnappy.com. The Womens Environmental Network is another good source of information on 020 7481 9004. Local laundering services can be located by contacting the National Association of Nappy Services (NANS) on 0121 693 4949.

Opticians - Many opticians will accept old spectacles for reuse in developing countries.

Chemists - Many chemists or pharmacists will accept old medicine bottles and jars for reuse or recycling and will dispose of medicines carefully.

Charity shops - These will accept most household goods such as old books, clothes, stamps and aluminium foil for reuse and recycling.

Plastic bags - Safeway have organised a national recycling scheme for plastic carrier bags. Their store in Rushmoor at Southwood, Farnborough has a container.

Aluminium foil - The proceeds from all aluminium foil collected from the foil sites (listed above) goes to The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.
