The Clear Sack Scheme
Using transparent sacks to separate them from rubbish, cans, plastic bottles, newspapers
and cardboard packaging are collected direct from the home on the same day as the
collection of normal refuse. The scheme now covers 57,000 homes, which is most of
the New Forest district. Since the introduction of this scheme in 1995, New Forest
residents have achieved a recycling rate of 17%. This increases to 26% if figures from the
Household Waste Recycling Centres are included. Plans are in hand to phase in the
scheme to cover the whole of the New Forest area by 2002.
Compost bins are available from New Forest District
Council for residents. A charge of £13.50 is made, please contact the recycling officer
on 023 8028 5959 for more details. Over 2,500 have been sold so far!
Other groups involved in recycling
Opticians - Many opticians will accept old
spectacles for reuse in developing countries.
Chemists - Many chemists or pharmacists will accept old medicine bottles
and jars for reuse or recycling and will dispose of medicines carefully.
Charity shops - These accept a range of household goods such as old
books, clothing, foil and stamps for reuse or recycling.
Nappy laundering services - Consider
"real" nappies as an alternative to disposables. Contact the National Association of Nappy Services (NANS) on 0121
693 4949.
Trade glass
Local business can recycle their glass. For more information,
contact the Commercial Waste Officer, Derek Durham on 023 8028 5989. |
