| A cracker of a recycling offer A cracker of an offer is being made to early bird recyclers in Hampshire. On or after the twelfth day of Christmas - from 6th January - all those with real Christmas Trees are being urged to take them to their local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and place them in the green garden waste bins. In return, Hampshire Waste, the waste recycling and disposal contractor to the county, is offering a bag of Pro-Grow organic soil conditioner at the discount price of £1. Normally retailing at £1.95 for a 30 litre bag, the compost is the result of all the green garden waste taken by the public to the HWRCs. "The offer is being made for a limited time to the first 100 at each centre" says Peter Mills, Hampshire Waste Composting Manager, who asks people to take the decorations off - including the tinsel which does not compost very well. "But we don't mind if they leave the odd chocolate on for us!" he adds. This year some 44,000 tonnes of green material has been processed by Hampshire Waste in three specially designed composting centres - one at Southleigh Havant, one at Paulsgrove, Portsmouth and one in the north near Basingstoke at Little Busheywarren. It is material that otherwise would have been wasted and buried in landfill sites, taking up space which is in very short supply in the county. 28 December 1998 For further information please contact Peter Mills, Composting Manager, Hampshire Waste Services, Tel: 01962 764000 or mobile 0468 854153. |
