Hampshire in line with National Waste Strategy

Project Integra, Hampshire's Integrated Waste Management Initiative welcomes the publication of the Government's 'Waste Strategy 2000' today.

The Strategy sets out short, medium and long term targets that local authorities must achieve. Project Integra will recycle or compost 25% of household waste during 2000, and is already ahead of the government's new target to recycle or compost 25% by 2005. Hampshire is well ahead of most other local authorities within the United Kingdom and is well on course to achieve the Government's next target to recycle or compost 30% of household waste by 2010.

Another important element of the Government's 'Waste Strategy 2000' published today is partnership working. Project Integra excels in this field with all of the local authorities in Hampshire working together to manage waste produced by its residents in a safe and environmentally sound way. This was demonstrated earlier this week by the submission of a joint recycling plan reflecting the needs of all of the fourteen local authorities in Hampshire.

The costs of implementing this strategy on a national level are likely to be high. Project Integra is looking forward to the governments spending review and receiving further details about how the initiatives will be funded without creating an additional burden to the Council Tax payer.

Project Integra has been awarded Beacon Council Status by the DETR in recognition of its pioneering work in the delivery of sustainable waste management, its partnership approach and already high recycling rate.
