Local authorities should bridge the gap

Local authorities must act as the catalyst between governments, other local authorities, industry, non-governmental organisations and the public if the sustainable consumption message is to be heeded.

Speaking on the final day of the Down to Earth Conference in Southampton, Councillor Alex Varden, Chairman of Hampshire County Council’s Public Protection Committee, said local authorities should bridge the gap between expert opinion and grass roots action.

He said: "Education has a fundamental role to play, and its importance was one of the key messages of the conference.

"Young people from all over Hampshire debated the issue of sustainable consumption at one of Down to Earth’s satellite events, at Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh. It sparked a lively debate, and provided a platform for the younger generation to air their opinions."

Co-operation and partnership were other key themes of the conference. Cllr Varden said: "Delegates enjoyed meeting people from different sectors, and it was interesting to note how so many issues were common to all. It provided a forum for them to discuss actions needed to ensure momentum is maintained.

"We’re confident that this conference will herald a shift in attitudes. We have a real challenge ahead to engage the people of Hampshire in the debate, but we are committed to involving everyone.

"The work of Down to Earth has only just started, and its impact will continue for some time. This conference has provided an ideal springboard for future action."
