MORE FOR LESS - RECYCLING IN HAMPSHIRE

The recycling rate throughout Hampshire is set to rocket due to new and innovative contracts awarded by Hampshire County Council's Public Protection Committee for the management of the majority of the county’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.

The new three-year contracts, which begin on 1 July 1998, set out to increase recycling through the Household Waste Recycling Centres from 39% to over 60% throughout the entire county. Due to an innovative management approach, the new contracts valued at over £500,000 per annum will return savings in excess of 10% over previous years.

The contracts will be implemented via three contractors, Onyx Hampshire Ltd, Hopkins Recycling Ltd and Hampshire Recycling Ltd.

Says Kevin Hopkins of Hopkins Recycling Ltd, "I am delighted to be given this opportunity to help fight the War on Waste in Hampshire. We aim to provide first class recycling facilities for Hampshire's residents and assist Project Integra to recycle more than 25% of all household waste by the year 2001."

In order to achieve these targets, the contractors will now be separating soil and rubble for recycling. The Household Waste Recycling Centres can take a vast range of materials ranging from glass bottles to garden waste to household furniture. Some items of unwanted furniture and household items can be bought on site from the operator. The centres also operate a CFC removal service for all refrigerators and freezers that are delivered.
