Winter signals revised opening hours for County Council's HWRCs

The onset of winter also heralds the arrival of revised opening hours at Hampshire’s 24 household waste recycling centres (HWRCs).

From 1 October until 31 March next year, all HWRCs will close at the earlier time of 4.30pm as they cannot operate in the dark due to health and safety reasons. Opening times are unaffected. Anyone wishing to confirm the opening days or times of their local HWRC should contact Hampshire County Council’s waste management enquiry line on 01962 847021 or see www.integra.org.uk.

Chairman of the County Council’s Business Panel, Councillor Alex Varden, said: "Our HWRCs are extremely well used facilities, and play a significant role in helping Hampshire have one of the highest recycling rates in the country, and achieving Beacon Council status for sustainable management of waste.

"Currently, Hampshire’s HWRCs recycle an average of more than 50%, with some sites regularly achieving 70%."

Items that can be recycled or reused at most sites include newspapers and cardboard, green garden waste, glass bottles and jars, bric-a-brac, textiles, books, metal items, engine oil, plastic bottles and refrigerators.

People can not only bring unwanted items to HWRCs, but they can buy many of the goods that others have left – ask site staff for details. Do not forget that all HWRCs are closed on 25 and 26 December.
