Great start for Segensworth recycling centre

More than half of the waste delivered to the new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Segensworth, Fareham, was recycled during the first two weeks of operation.

Hampshire County Councillor Alex Varden, Chairman of the Business Panel, officially opened the site at Barnes Wallis Road on 17 March, and heard that over 55% of household waste has been recycled since it opened its gates in February - and that figure is set to rise.

The purpose-built facility boasts the first Oxfam book bank at a Hampshire HWRC, and is the first new County Council HWRC to be opened in five years.

It heralds the start of an ongoing programme to replace several of these important and well-used facilities that have outgrown their sites or which only had temporary planning consent. The next priority sites for relocation are those in Winchester and Alton.

Councillor Varden said: "We anticipate that this site will handle more than 10,000 tonnes of waste each year, and we'll be looking to recycle at least 60% of this. I'm confident we will build on this excellent start to make the Segensworth HWRC one of the best in the county."

Also present at the official opening were officers from the County Council and Fareham Borough Council; Hopkins Recycling, who operate the site; and contractors Dean & Dyball and Upton McGougan, who designed and built it.

The Segensworth HWRC's split-level design means that householders can drive up and place their waste directly into bins, without having to climb steps. This makes it more accessible, efficient and safer to use.

Items that can be recycled or reused include newspaper and cardboard, green garden waste, glass bottles and jars, bric-a-brac, textiles, books, plastic bottles, cans, scrap metal and household appliances.

Project Integra, Hampshire's integrated waste management strategy, is a partnership between the County Council, the 11 district councils, two unitary authorities and private waste contractor, Hampshire Waste Services. Project Integra has recently been awarded Beacon Council status by the Government.
