| A new life for your Christmas tree - at your local HWRC! About five million Christmas trees are being disposed of in Britain during January 2000. If they were all thrown away they would create 9,000 tonnes of waste - enough to fill the Albert Hall three times over! Hampshire County Council has provided its residents with recycling alternatives. On the weekend of 8th and 9th January 2000, the first 50 Hampshire residents recycling their Christmas tree at their local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) had the opportunity to buy one bag of Pro-Grow organic soil conditioner and get a second bag free! General Waste, the War on Waste campaign mascot, was out and about encouraging truly "green" recycling. Almost all of Hampshire's HWRCs have a bin specially for "green garden waste" or vegetation, which is shredded and composted over several months, then sieved and bagged to become Pro-Grow - 100% recycled from Hampshire gardens! It's a great soil improver, and can be used as a nutrient when planting-in. Did you know that well over 50% of everything brought to Hampshire's HWRCs is reused or recycled? Some sites have achieved over 70% recycling - so congratulations to all the Hampshire householders who are making such good use of the facilities provided by Hampshire County Council. Why not make it YOUR New Year's resolution to recycle more! Items that can be recycled or reused range from green garden waste to glass bottles and jars, bric-a-brac to textiles, and plastic bottles to fridges. Remember to have a look around your local HWRC during your next visit, to see if there's anything of use to you! (Some items are for sale, so always check with site staff first.) With the help of Hampshire residents, Project Integra and the War on Waste is on target to recycle 25% of household waste in the year 2000.
