DIY giant helps fight Hampshire's War on Waste in the garden

Portswood (Southampton) DIY store B&Q has teamed up with the local council to help fight Hampshire's War on Waste in the garden.

Shoppers visiting the store in Mayfield Road next Wednesday (Aug 26) will learn handy hints on how to make their gardens even greener by cutting down on the amount of rubbish they produce by re-using and recycling even more.

War on Waste is the publicity campaign aimed at raising awareness about Project Integra, the integrated waste management strategy for Hampshire, involving all the councils within the county together with private contractor Hampshire Waste Services.

Southampton City Council's principal waste management officer, Ray Smith will be on hand at a special display near B&Q's gardening section to give advice on home composting and highlight environmentally beneficial items like water butts and lattice-work fencing made from recycled plastics. For barbecues, people will be encouraged to buy re-useable plastic cups and plates rather than paper disposable ones.

Enlarging on the subject, local B&Q store manager Mark Davies, said: "There's so much we can all do in the garden, from the more obvious things like nailing bits of wood together to make a rustic-looking planter... to filling old car tyres with soil and flowers to create imaginative plant holders."

The display in Portswood is part of a Hampshire-wide exercise involving B&Q stores at Basingstoke, Hilsea, near Portsmouth, and Fareham.

Project Integra's Angela Bethell, said: "Having a major retailer like B&Q as a partner can really help us to get the message across by encouraging people to both save money and help the environment."

She added: "In the long term, reducing waste could also avoid increases in council tax. Garden waste amounts to over 30% of the contents of the average dustbin, therefore it is vital we reduce, re-use and recycle as much as possible."
