Opportunity to see recycling at work

As part of Portsmouth's Environmental Fun Fortnight, Hampshire Waste Services is holding an open day at the Portsmouth Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) on Saturday 27 May from 10am - 2pm to allow families from across the county free access to see how their contributions help to make a difference.

Kerbside collections of recyclable items such as paper, card, cans and plastic bottles have helped to give Hampshire one of the highest recovery rates in the country. Over 27 million plastic bottles alone were recycled last year in the county.

There will be a number of visitor attractions, and this represents an ideal opportunity for children to learn more about the impact of waste on the environment. The 'Scrap Store', a source of recycled materials for local schools will be hosting a mask making workshop. There will be a 'What can you recycle?' colouring and drawing competition and an interactive computer game will show children and adults alike how to reduce, reuse and recycle around the home.

Also, there will be tours of the facility showing the processing of dry recyclables at one of the most advanced sorting facilities of its kind. Stands will also be hosted by Friends of the Earth and details will be available on how recyclables are collected from the doorstep.

"The open day promises to give an insight into an area of life that is not only informative and educational but which can enable us all to make our environment a better place to live in," says Jeannette Camilleri of Hampshire Waste.

Project Integra, a collaboration between Public and Private sector has given Hampshire a recycling figure nearly three times the national average and it is committed to continuing to strengthen and build upon the relationship between itself and the community it serves.
