Green suggestion from Hampshire Waste Services

A workers' suggestion that will save a company in excess of £100,000 a year will also have spin-off environmental benefits to Hampshire residents, reducing the number of lorries on the roads and thereby reducing congestion levels and exhaust pollution.

The "green" suggestion from the operational staff at Hampshire Waste Services, the private waste contractor, involves the use of additional weighbridges at the point of loading in each of its five transfer stations so that drivers can see how full the lorry is at a glance via a digital display.

"It means that drivers can fill the lorry to the maximum legal limit every time," explains Hampshire Waste Operations Director, Richard Bray. "This results in savings in turn around and transport time and keeps down mileage costs per tonne. It also has spin off environmental benefits with less traffic on the roads and therefore less congestion and less pollution."

Previously drivers had to fill, drive off to the weighbridge at the entrance to the site to be weighed, drive back to start the process again, and eventually leave the site on a 'near as possible' load.

The company estimates that on an annual throughput at the transfer stations of 287,000 tonnes, the new operating methods will result in over 2,500 lorry loads less per annum. But to save, the company will also need to spend. To achieve the annual savings of over £100,000, the total capital investment including extra weighbridges and loading machines adds up to some £150,000.
