It's official - Pro-Grow is certified organic

The Soil Association has given the thumbs up to Pro-Grow, the organic soil conditioner produced in Hampshire from the garden cuttings placed in the green bins at the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

They have confirmed what gardeners, organic growers, horticulturists and farmers have known for years - that Hampshire's soil conditioner is a quality product.

The official accreditation certifies that Pro-Grow is both organically produced and GM free. Now new bags are under design to carry the famous Soil Association symbol. It is a proud moment for the waste management contractor Hampshire Waste, part of Onyx Aurora, which first set up and now runs the wholesale composting sites in the county.

Says Hampshire Waste Composting Manager, Peter Mills: "There have been so many hoops to jump through in the eight month accreditation process that we are just delighted to see it confirmed. We can't wait to get the quality mark on the bags and spread the message."

Sales of the product have remained buoyant throughout the winter period. "Once people have tried it, they love it and come back for more," says Peter. He has also been busy with bulk supplies to landscapers, farmers and organic growers, one of whom intends to use it on asparagus beds to boost his sales to a major supermarket chain.

Hampshire Waste is aiming to recycle an even greater amount of green waste in the coming year, upping the tonnages to 60,000 - an increase of 50% on the 40,000 tonnes processed in 1999.

This follows the construction of two new purpose built sites. Opening shortly is Chilbolton Down near Stockbridge to receive waste from the South West of the county, and the South East will have a new site opening at Down End, Fareham in May. Little Bushywarren Copse, Basingstoke was expanded last year to cope with 120 tonnes a day from the North.

Pro-Grow is available loose at £4.70 per cubic metre or in 30 litre bags at £1.95 from recycling centres and selected garden centres.
