| Autumn Amnesty Success (III)Over 60 people took their computers, for reuse or recycling,
to the PC World Autumn Amnesty, which took place over two consecutive weekends last month.
All the computers collected over the amnesty period were taken away by Intex, a Hampshire based computer recycling company. They were then tested for their suitability for reuse, or stripped down to their component parts for recycling. Any items that cannot be reused or recycled will be disposed of according to current legal requirements. Local resident, Tim Bridle said "I had two old computer screens that still worked, but I've since upgraded. I think it's great that these can now be taken away and recycled, which is more environmentally friendly than keeping them in the loft!" Everyone who brought a computer was asked to complete a very short questionnaire to assess the need for future events of this nature. 74% of the items brought back had already been replaced, and only 37.5% would otherwise have been taken to a household waste recycling centre. The computers collected ranged considerably from old basic BBCs to some more recent models. 81.5% were still working, being retired as they were updated, not because they were broken. Anyone who missed this amnesty could contact Intex directly on 01705 594999, or home computers can be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres in Hampshire. 15 October 1999 For further information about Project Integra please contact Angela Bethell at Hampshire County Council on 01962 847026. |
