Parents are being encouraged to change their babies' nappies to help the environment.

Hart District Council and its partners in Project Integra are highlighting the problems of disposable nappies and promoting the alternatives that are available in a brand new nappy shaped leaflet.

It is estimated that over one million nappies are thrown away in Hampshire every week. This costs Hampshire council tax payers £500,000 in disposal. By the time they are two years old one child will have used the equivalent of 20 trees in disposable nappy paper padding.

The days of folding the traditional ‘terry square’ and securing with a pin have been superseded by a new shaped style which is fastened with Velcro or poppers. In addition, you can get someone else to do the ‘dirty’ work for you via a nappy laundering service! All you have to do is put the soiled nappies in a pre-purchased container, and once a week these are collected and a clean supply delivered.

By using washable nappies at home parents can not only help the environment but also save money. Once the nappies have been purchased they can be used time and again, even used on little brothers and sisters who might follow.

Councillor Mrs Susan Band, Chairman of Environmental Health and Housing says, "With such a convenient choice of alternatives to the disposable nappy now available, every parent has the opportunity to preserve the environment for their children's future."
