| The building of the pyramids at a rapid paceA giant engineering works
is now underway in Portsmouth by Hampshire Waste Services, part of the Onyx Aurora Group,
as the first of the three pyramids of waste takes shape on the Paulsgrove Landfill Site.
The landraising scheme at the entrance to Portsmouth is intended to extend the life of the 128 acre site by another eight years, with each pyramid being turfed as it is finished and converted into a country park with trees, walks and picnic sites. Deliveries of waste began in January, following months of work by Hampshire Waste Services to engineer and dry line the cells for tipping. Scheduled to take 250,000 tonnes over a period of some 12 months, the first of the three pyramids is filling up more quickly than planned due to the large volumes of waste being received. "The signs are that it will take just nine months to create this first pyramid due to the high tonnages of waste coming to us," says Hampshire Waste Operations Director, Richard Bray. "The amounts received at Paulsgrove during December, January and February are significantly higher than usual and we see no signs of this falling. The celebrations at Christmas and for the Millennium, plus the upturn in the economy leading to higher spending on consumer goods, are all attributed by the company to the higher levels of rubbish. The scarcity of local landfill sites is one of the reasons why incineration, for residual 'black bag' waste, has always been important to Hampshire. Alongside recycling and composting it is a key element in the county's waste strategy, Project Integra. Three energy recovery incinerators have been put forward by Hampshire Waste; one in the North of the county which has received consent from Hampshire County Council; one in the South East which has been rejected by Portsmouth City Councillors; and one in the South West, where a planning application is yet to be lodged. 15 March 2000 |
