Farnborough shoppers join War on Waste with Asda’s Tasty Savings Roadshow.

Farnborough shoppers were treated to a ‘Tasty Savings Roadshow’ when Hampshire’s War on Waste arrived at Asda’s superstore in Farnborough.

Customers watched cookery demonstrations based around the theme of ‘recycling food,’ for example, using left over vegetables for stir-frys, soup or hearty winter casseroles. General Waste, the War on Waste campaign’s colourful mascot, was also there handing out leaflets with Asda’s top recycling tips.

Asda has joined forces with Hampshire’s War on Waste for the Roadshow and has devised some tasty recipes designed to make all the leftovers go further in 1998. The visit to Farnborough was part of a major tour throughout Hampshire - stores at Havant, Eastleigh and Totton also took part. The aim was to encourage local residents to reduce, reuse and recycle their household rubbish.

Angela Bethell, Project Co-ordinator of War on Waste at Hampshire County Council, said: "We know from our research that we probably throw out more food than we need to - so, making better use of leftovers has to be a great idea. Even scraps of food, like potato peelings can be turned into compost and re-used on the garden."

Angela said the War on Waste had make a big impact in Hampshire since its launch in November 1996, commenting: "We are currently recycling 15% of household waste, which is nearly three times the national average, but by the year 2000 we aim to recycle 25%."

Rachel Pearce of Asda Stores Ltd added: "We were delighted to join up with War on Waste for this initiative. Our shoppers really enjoyed the cookery demonstrations and found the roadshow interesting and informative. The venture also provided us with a great opportunity to work closely with the community and pass on such an important message."
