Recycling your new year cheer

Project Integra is challenging all households in Hampshire to help towards the target to recycle an extra 100,000 aluminium cans in Hampshire during January, which will in turn be donated to the Blue Peter "New Future" appeal.

Says Angela Bethell from Hampshire County Council "We are pleased to be able to support the Blue Peter New Future Appeal in such a positive manner. If every household in Hampshire recycles just one extra can, instead of throwing it in the bin, we will exceed our target by 500,000 cans, demonstrating how much can be achieved with very little effort."

Aluminium cans can be fed into any kerbside collection scheme along with steel cans, newspapers, magazines and plastic bottles. In addition, cans can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre or any other can bank in Hampshire. The cans are then taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where they are separated from all the other recyclables, baled, and when the target is achieved, 100,000 cans will be donated to the Blue Peter appeal.

Blue Peter are collecting aluminium cans and foil to raise funds for building and supplying equipment for three new primary schools in Mozambique. The appeal also aims to raise enough funds to provide three new teachers' training centres. Blue Peter have set their own target of 500 tonnes of aluminium cans and foil to fund the scheme.

The Hampshire challenge will run from 1 to 31 January 1999, and will hopefully assist Blue Peter in achieving their target to recycle 500 tonnes of aluminium, whilst showing Households in Hampshire just how easy it is to recycle.
