Charity benefits from supermarket bottle bank sponsorship

Recycle your Christmas and Millennium glass bottles and jars to benefit a children's charity. That's the challenge Hart District Council and Somerfield are making to residents in Fleet.

Somerfield supermarket in Fleet is sponsoring the 'Penny in a Bottle' scheme by donating 1 penny to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for every glass container recycled in the glass recycling banks at Church Road and Victoria Road car park in Fleet between 17 and 31 January 2000. Make-A-Wish grants wishes to Children with life threatening illnesses.

Hart District Council are aiming to raise £300 for Make-A-Wish by collecting over 30,000 bottles and jars, that's 7.5 tonnes of glass, at both recycling centres during the two week period.

To cater for the extra demand on glass recycling sites expected after the Millennium the Council is placing additional banks at its major recycling sites. By keeping back their glass for recycling until the last two weeks in January residents avoid the rush and raise money for this good cause.

Martin Duke, Manager of Somerfield, said, "By supporting 'Penny in a Bottle', Somerfield are demonstrating their continued commitment to the environment and a locally based charity."
