eat, drink and RECYCLE CANS

Local authorities in Eastleigh, New Forest, Test Valley and Winchester, and Hampshire County Council, in partnership with sponsors Corus Steel Packaging Recycling and Alupro, are launching a bus advertising campaign to encourage people to recycle more food and drink cans.

The bright yellow posters can be seen on the backs of buses in the Lymington, Andover, Eastleigh and Winchester areas during the next few weeks.

At the moment, 4 out of every 5 beer, soft drink, food and pet food cans in Hampshire are being buried in landfill sites. These are filling up rapidly, and the mountain of waste must be reduced. Cans are made of valuable metals which can be recycled and made into new products – more cans, parts of cars and aeroplanes, among many, many other useful items.

Over 75% of Hampshire households have a separate collection of recyclables, and there are also can banks and recycling centres throughout the county - it is easy to recycle all cans!

The steel and aluminium in these cans could be made into new products, conserving natural resources (coal, iron ore and bauxite) and energy, saving money and reducing damage to the environment.

The local authorities in these areas, all partners in Project Integra, are supported in the campaign by sponsorship from Corus Steel Packaging Recycling, an organisation which works with local authorities right across the UK to develop the collection infrastructure necessary for the recovery and recycling of steel cans.

Jackie Balboni, Communications Manager at Corus Steel Packaging Recycling says, "We are extremely pleased by the steps which the five local authorities are taking to encourage more can recycling among consumers in their area. The recyclability of foods and drinks cans is an important environmental message. The use of highly visible bus advertising will have a positive impact when it comes to drawing the attention of the general public to these messages."

Project Integra partners involved the campaign are also supported by Alupro, the Aluminium Packaging and Recycling Organisation, which promotes the environmental benefits of aluminium can recycling. Alupro, too, is providing sponsorship for the bus poster campaign and actively encourages householders to recycle more cans in an effort to reduce waste and conserve natural resources.
