| Racing driver Derek Warwick helps rubbish to become an art
form Over the years top racing driver Derek Warwick has made driving an art form and now he intends doing the same for rubbish. His motor dealership in Southamptons, West Quay Road - Derek Warwick Honda - is sponsoring a new competition in which art students across Hampshire have been challenged to produce unique creations from waste and recycled materials as part of the ground-breaking War on Waste campaign. Students at five higher and further education colleges have been invited to enter a competition based on the theme, Garbage Art. The competition will run until the end of the Spring term, when entries will be judged and exhibited to the public throughout the county. The creator of the winning piece will receive £250 towards their art studies. Derek Warwick, a keen recycler at home himself, said: "As a business we pride ourselves on being very environmentally friendly. Cutting down on the waste we produce is not only a good idea for its own sake, but saves on costs as well. As a manufacturer Honda are committed to building their cars with as many recyclables as possible." Laurie Dixon, General Manager at Derek Warwick Honda, said once entries started coming in a selection would be displayed in the showroom. "No doubt there will be some novel ideas - Im sure our customers will find it fascinating - and anything that spreads the War on Waste message has to be good." Councillor Varden, Chairman of Hampshire County Councils Public Protection Committee, commented: "Were really looking forward to seeing the results of this competition - hopefully some of the best artistic talent in Hampshire will be able to demonstrate a completely new way of looking at rubbish! Many schools and colleges already rely on waste materials for creative purposes. Using garbage in a creative way helps reduce the waste mountain as well as helping students save money as they dont need to buy expensive materials for their work." He added: "Those in this age group are also key players in this campaign as the knowledge and habits they acquire at this stage will hopefully continue throughout their lives." The competition is not only open to art students at college - entries will also be accepted from anyone over the age of 16.
