Hampshire shortlisted as national centre of excellence for waste and recycling

Government officials are to visit Hampshire next week to hear about the county’s achievements in waste management and recycling. This visit is to assess the bid by Hampshire’s councils to be identified as a national centre of excellence under the Government’s new 'Beacon Councils' scheme.

With Hampshire set to achieve a 25% recycling rate next year, while the UK average is still only 8%, other parts of the UK are already looking to Hampshire for advice. Key to Hampshire’s success has been extensive public consultation, as well as the partnership between all the councils and the private sector, known as Project Integra.

Bob Lisney of Hampshire County Council said, "Hampshire residents clearly have a lot to be proud of. Recycling levels this high are on a par with the best in Europe and the rest of the world. We are now looking at how we can move towards higher targets of 40 or 50% recycling."

Hampshire’s approach to waste management has already attracted a lot of interest from other parts of the country and abroad, with delegations from as far afield as China and Japan visiting the county. Anyone who is interested in finding out more about waste management and recycling in Hampshire can visit the Project Integra web site at www.integra.org.uk.
