Magpies find rich pickings in recycling!

Eastleigh residents can help Winchester Hospital’s Magpie Scanner Appeal by recycling more waste at some of Hampshire’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.

One of the operators of the site, Hopkins Recycling Ltd, will donate the profits from everything brought in or sold at their Woodside Avenue, Eastleigh and Garnier Road, Winchester sites on Saturday the 14th February.

On the day, free chopped and bagged wood will be available at Garnier Road, and people will be invited to give a voluntary donation to the Appeal. Bric-a-brac is sold at both sites, and quality second-hand clothing will also be offered for sale.

General Waste, Hampshire’s War on Waste friendly mascot, will be visiting the Winchester site during the morning, joined by a Magpie to keep a heady eye on all the bargains.

Director Chris Hopkins, said: "This is a very worthwhile charity and local residents will benefit directly from the results of this appeal. We are delighted to be able to help, and that household waste can be recycled and put to such good use!"

The Appeal aims to raise £1.8 million for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scanner which will serve the Winchester and Eastleigh area communities by diagnosing a wide variety of illnesses and conditions, among them heart complaints. For more details about the Magpie Scanner Appeal, contact the Appeal Office on 01962 825204.

In 1995, Hopkins held a similar day and raised over £1,000 for a local children’s hospice that was then being built.

These are just two of Hamphire’s 26 Household Waste Recycling centres, which are open all year round (except some bank holidays - ring 01962 for availability). On average, almost 40% of everything brought to the sites by Hampshire’s public is reused or recycled.

Photo opportunity - General Waste and Magpie mascots will be at Garnier Road, Winchester site at approx 10am on Saturday 14th February.

The War on Waste campaign is run by Project Integra, a joint initiative between the county, district and unitary authorities of Hampshire and private waste contractor Hampshire Waste Services.
