MARCHWOOD TRANSFER STATION FIRE
A STATEMENT BY ONYX HAMPSHIRE

Onyx can confirm that there was a fire at the Marchwood Transfer Station, Hampshire on Saturday 22 January 2005.

Precautionary advice was issued to Marchwood residents on Sunday morning advising them to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed due to the risk of fume inhalation.

The automatic fire alarm system on site was triggered at approximately 9:30pm and Hampshire Fire and Rescue, together with the other emergency services arrived shortly afterwards and took control of the site.

The Environment Agency was also in attendance and worked with the fire brigade in protecting surface water drainage.

The fire started in the main waste storage bunker and was contained in this area.

There was approximately 200 tonnes of mixed household waste, road sweepings, litter and trade waste in the bunker.

The fire was extinguished during the morning of Sunday 23 January. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and the site has been closed for operation.

Alternative sites have been arranged for deliveries, so there will be no impact on the normal domestic collection service for residual household waste.

The site has undergone a structural survey. Onyx is awaiting the written reports.
