60% recycling figure is ‘icing on the cake’ for Hampshire’s War On Waste campaign

Hampshire has achieved a significant national milestone as over 60% of households now have their recyclable waste collected from their homes.

To celebrate this figure, a special cake was commissioned by Project Integra and Brockenhurst College catering department in the New Forest rose to the challenge.

Shirley Sweeny, patisserie chef at the college, who has previously enjoyed the honour of making a cake for the Queen, found this an interesting proposition. She said: "The cake took two days on and off to complete, but the logo was the hardest part as I had to recreate it by hand using Royal Icing."

The beautiful 14 inch oval fruit cake was illustrated by the Project Integra logo and a 60% figure - symbolising the collective recycling achievement.

General Waste, the War on Waste mascot was on hand to donate the cake to Rachel Pitt from the charity Age Concern, who took it back for the residents at the day centre in New Milton to enjoy over Christmas.
