DECOMMISSIONING OF HALON FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

It is illegal to possess a fire extinguisher containing halon gas after 31 December 2003. Halon is a type of CFC, and can attack the ozone layer and contribute to global warming.

The legislation only applies to halon gas appliances, so extinguishers containing liquid or powder are unaffected. The appliance should clearly state `Halon' or `BCF' somewhere on the cover if it contains halon. Anybody who is unsure should contact the product manufacturer for guidance.

Those who have small household extinguishers containing halon, need to properly dispose of them. Under no circumstances should the extinguisher be let off. The good news for Hampshire householders is that halon fire extinguishers can be taken to any of the 26 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) throughout the County.

People requiring details of their nearest recycling centre should log on to www.integra.org.uk or call Hampshire County Council's Waste Management team on 01962 847021. Please note that only householders with extinguishers from their own property will be able to take their appliance to one of Hampshire's waste recycling centres - commercial operators are advised to call the `Halon Hotline' on 0800 010 106.

Ends

10 December 2003
