| PRO-GROW PROVES A BOOSTER FOR SALAD CROPS ONYX ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP is set to boost the South's salad crops by providing tonnes of their peat free organic soil conditioner to Vitacress Salads. Vitacress has ordered 10,000 tonnes of Pro-Grow, a soil conditioner made from green garden waste from households across Hampshire. Onyx has been delivering supplies of Pro-Grow to Vitacress for over two years. This latest 12-month contract will see the soil conditioner put to use at all of the company's UK farms, on both its organic salads and, for the first time, its conventional crops. Vitacress, the largest grower of watercress and specialist baby leaf salads in Europe, has three farms in Hampshire and supplies a host of household name supermarkets with its bagged salads. With consumer demand for organic produce continuing to expand, Pro-Grow - which is certified 'organic' by the Soil Association - is the perfect match for Vitacress's salad-growing operation. Jim Flambert, Vitacress's organic production manager, said: "We've used Pro-Grow since 2001 and it has been so successful that we are dramatically increasing its application next year. We intend to use it extensively across our crops and also trial it at our farms in Portugal." "It's a good soil conditioner, and has all the nutrients we need to grow the crops, so it really fits our profile. We're very pleased with it indeed." Pro-Grow itself is a green success story. It is produced by Onyx from grass cuttings, hedge clippings and other green garden waste from across Hampshire. Since 1996, a staggering 300,000 tonnes of green waste has been recycled into 150,000 tonnes of the product. It is also directly contributing to the reduction in the use of peat-based composts and saving a valuable natural resource from going to landfill.
