FREE DISPOSAL FOR WITHDRAWN GARDEN CHEMICALS As a result of an EU review around 80 garden chemical products can no longer be used beyond the end of this year. This is being done for environmental reasons and not because safety concerns have been identified. Anyone who uses chemically based garden products, such as lawn treatments, and still has some in their house or garden should be alerted to this change in legislation. Hampshire gardeners can comply with the legislation by taking any offending products to one of seven Household Waste Recycling Centres across the County. The recycling centres have dedicated containers to store hazardous household substances which are then taken for specialist and safe disposal. Materials should be kept in their original containers wherever possible and the site manager should be informed upon arrival to ensure the waste is placed in the correct disposal unit. 31st December is legally the last day these products, mainly lawn treatments, can be used, with 31st March 2004 given as the deadline for their safe disposal. The County Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Councillor Keith Estlin said: "The County Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres provide an ideal and free solution for householders who now need to dispose of these withdrawn products." Notes to Editors 1. The following Household Waste Recycling Centres will accept the chemicals identified by the EU, free of charge:
