ROYAL TREATMENT FOR CHINEHAM’S ENERGY RECOVERY FACILITY
(Hampshire Waste Services press release)

The Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at Chineham near Basingstoke will be officially opened on Friday 26th September by HRH The Princess Royal.

The Princess’s visit will include a tour of the world class Energy Recovery Facility and an opportunity to meet the key players who together with Onyx Environmental Group, the facility’s operators, have been responsible for achieving this milestone in Hampshire’s integrated waste strategy.

The Princess Royal will be able to see first hand how the plant is operated. Following the visitor’s route she will be able to watch waste being deposited into the furnace and visit the control room to see the cutting edge technology in action. The Princess will then conclude her visit by unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.

The Chineham ERF will process approximately 90,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste each year - saving significant amounts of rapidly diminishing landfill space – and generating around 8MWs of electricity for the national grid, enough to power more than 8,000 local homes.

It is the first of three facilities in Hampshire which will recover waste which cannot be traditionally recycled. Together they form an intrinsic part of the strategy to manage Hampshire’s waste. Construction of the second and third facilities, at Marchwood in Southampton and in Portsmouth, have been phased to follow Chineham and are progressing well.

Development of the county’s three ERFs has been driven by a lack of landfill space and an ever-increasing rise in the amount of waste we all produce, with a significant proportion going to landfill.

The Hampshire Waste Strategy, known as ‘Project Integra’, is the most progressive integrated waste management system in Britain and provides sustainable waste management for all domestic waste in the county.

Project Integra is a unique partnership between Hampshire County Council, two Unitary Authorities of Southampton and Portsmouth, the 11 District Councils, and Hampshire Waste Services, part of Onyx Environmental Group.

"We are delighted that HRH The Princess Royal has kindly agreed to open the first of Onyx’s ERFs in Hampshire" said Cyrille du Peloux, chief executive of Onyx. "This is a true milestone in an infrastructure project that will maintain the county at the forefront of integrated waste management."
