NEW ALRESFORD RECYCLING CENTRE TO OPEN

Hampshire County Council opens a bigger and better household waste recycling centre (HWRC) in Alresford later this month, with additional capacity and containers for residents to use.

The Prospect Place facility opens at 8am on 21 August, and will offer people the chance to recycle their garden waste. The hedge trimmings and grass cuttings are sent to a central composting site to become organic soil conditioner Pro Grow, available to buy from the site.

Bulky household waste and recyclables can be taken to the new HWRC free of charge, including cardboard, glass bottles and jars, textiles and clothing, car batteries, used engine oil, bric-a-brac, furniture, and household appliances - such as fridges, freezers, cookers and washing machines. A separate bin will be provided for non-recyclable bulky household waste.

The County Council's Executive Member for Environment, Councillor Keith Estlin, said: "There is a huge public demand for recycling. This new facility will allow Alresford residents the chance to recycle more than with the old facility - and easier too. In turn, this will boost Project Integra's recycling performance, which is aiming to top 40% within the next 18 months."

The new site will replace the former facility at Prospect Place. The temporary HWRC, operating during the redevelopment, will close permanently at 7pm on 20 August.

The new HWRC will be operated by Hopkins Recycling Ltd on behalf of the County Council.

Hampshire gardeners wanting to take early action to comply with a European Union ruling outlawing about 80 garden chemical products can take them, free of charge, to the following County Council HWRCs, which are licensed to accept hazardous household substances: Andover, Basingstoke, Bordon, Farnborough, Marchwood, Netley and Winchester. HWRCs in Portsmouth and Southampton also accept the items.
