Hampshire receives Government funding to improve recycling Project Integra, Hampshire’s waste management partnership, has successfully secured government funding to improve recycling and composting facilities in Hampshire. £76 million was available from the second round of bidding for the National Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund for local authorities in England and Wales and over £5 million has been received for projects in Hampshire. In a recent government report "Waste Not Want Not", Hampshire was hailed as an example of good practice for it’s partnership approach to waste management , having already achieved a recycling rate that is double the national average. Councillor Williams, Chairman of the Project Integra Management Board commented, "Due to it’s far sighted approach, Project Integra already has a very successful track record for waste management, but we have now reached the stage where significant further investment is needed to enable us to increase our recycling rate further." He continued "We are delighted that DEFRA has endorsed this with an injection of over £5 million. We can now continue with our plans for reaching the governments target to recycle 40% of household waste by 2006." The funding received includes £2.4 million to increase composting capacity and enable more green waste to be collected and processed to produce Pro Grow the organic soil conditioner. In addition a combination of other successful applications in Hampshire received a share of the remaining funding for starting and expanding kerbside collection of garden waste and recyclables. Cllr Patrick Burridge, Vice-Chairman of the Project Integra Management Board said "The success of these bids reflects our joined up approach to waste management. This funding will enable us to put into place proven collection methods in conjunction with the facilities to reprocess the material." Further information:
