Prince Charles praises county's record on sustainable waste management

The Prince of Wales praised Hampshire's record on sustainable waste management when he presented a leading figure in the county's integrated waste management strategy with his OBE.

Bob Lisney, Head of Management Resources, Environment Group, at Hampshire County Council and Director of Project Integra, travelled to Buckingham Palace to receive his OBE. It was awarded in the New Year Honours for his contribution to sustainable waste management. He said: "The Prince said it was wonderful to see sustainable waste management recognised, and said we were doing a great job in Hampshire, with an acknowledged reputation and an impact on national strategy."

Project Integra was awarded Beacon Council status in December, and is one of the government's first wave of national centres of excellence for sustainable waste management. Bob said: "Since becoming a Beacon Council, we have had several calls each week from other local authorities wanting to come to see the secret of our success. We have one of the highest recycling rates in the country and certainly the highest number of households involved - some 600,000. We currently recycle 24% of rubbish across Hampshire, and we're on target to reach 25% this year."

Project Integra's first Beacon Council Open Day takes place at Southampton Guildhall on 23 May.
