Project Integra, Hampshire’s waste management partnership, are holding a Compost Day on Sunday 5 May from 10am – 4pm at The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and Arboretum in Ampfield, Romsey to promote the benefits of turning green garden rubbish into something worthwhile by composting it.

About 30% of the average dustbin is made up of grass cuttings, hedge trimmings and vegetable peelings and as Councillor Marsh, Chair of the Project Integra Scrutiny Panel explains, "the aim of the Compost Day is to provide people with all of the information needed to be able to turn green garden rubbish into a free, nutrient-rich compost that can be used around the garden."

There will be a wide range of information available, with displays, leaflets, examples of different compost units, information about a new compost bin offer for Hampshire residents and demonstration samples of Pro Grow, the organic soil conditioner that is processed by Hampshire Waste Services from the green waste Hampshire’s residents take along to their local Household Waste Recycling Centre. In addition there will also be representatives from The Composting Association on hand to answer all of your composting questions and queries.

The event is being organised to coincide with National Composting Awareness Week (28 April – 4 May) which this year is being supported by Alan Titchmarsh who said "I’ve composted my garden waste for as long as I can remember. Every garden and home has enough waste to produce a rich garden compost that has many uses. I am happy to be able to support Composting Awareness Week and hope it is a complete success."

Residents who come along to the Compost Day can also take the opportunity to see Hampshire’s organic soil conditioner Pro Grow at work for themselves by taking in a visit to The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and Arboretum. The Soil Association accredited Pro Grow helped to establish the Winter Garden area and is now also used throughout the gardens.
