NEW RECYCLING CENTRE FOR ALTON

Building has started on the first phase, an access road to a new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) for Alton; the recycling centre will be built as the second phase. By Summer 2002, the new bigger and better site, at Omega Park on the eastern outskirts of the town, will replace the existing recycling centre which is in the centre of town.

Says Patrick Burridge, Member for East Hants District Council, "The new HWRC will give Alton residents a state of the art facility with more space, split level bin bays for easy access, and longer opening hours. Because of its position in the centre of town, the existing site operates restricted opening hours, but the new site will be open later and will only be closed on 3 days of the year. "

Before building started, a full ecological survey was carried out. The wildlife on the new Omega Park site was a prime consideration; colonies of slow worms, frogs and toads were found, captured and safely relocated.

Executive Member for Hampshire County Council, Councillor John West says, "I am sorry that Alton residents have had to wait so long for this facility, but they will have an excellent new recycling centre, costing £750,000. Householders will be encouraged to use the site to increase Project Integra’s already impressive recycling rate of over 25%."

Natta Building Limited will take about six months to complete the new site, for Hampshire County Council, and it will be operated by a private contractor, Hopkins Recycling Limited, which has successfully managed the existing Alton HWRC.

Meanwhile residents can continue to take their bulky household waste for recycling or disposal, to the site at St Lawrence Road, Alton. Metal items, engine oil, textiles, fridges and freezers, green garden waste, limited amounts of soil and rubble, electrical items and car batteries should be taken to the site and placed in the appropriate bin for recycling. The future of the old site is under consideration, but will, in the short term revert to car parking.
