GLASS: IT'S NOT RUBBISH, RECYCLE IT!

RUSHMOOR BOROUGH COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE

Beer, pickle, sauces, jam, wine, ketchup and baby food all have one thing in common: glass containers. Many of today’s food and drink items come in glass bottles and jars, but how many of us recycle all these ‘empties’ at local bottle banks?

Recent research into household waste in Hampshire found that more than half of the glass bottles and jars that are disposed of in the county end up in landfill sites rather than being recycled via bottle banks. While 20,000 tonnes of glass bottles and jars get recycled in Hampshire, 24,000 tonnes are still being thrown in the rubbish bin - this is enough glass to make 72 million new ones!

Rushmoor Borough Council plays an active part in Project Integra, Hampshire’s waste management partnership. With support from supermarket chain Safeway, Project Integra is launching a three month campaign to encourage more people to recycle their glass bottles and jars at local bottle banks.

Nicola Ellen, Environmental Manager for Safeway Stores plc. commented:

"Safeway is very pleased to support Project Integra. Safeway places environmental concerns at the forefront of their initiatives and any project that increases the public’s awareness of the importance of recycling is worthy of our support."

Making glass from old bottles and jars reduces the need to quarry hundreds of thousands of tonnes of raw materials, and also uses less energy than that required to make new glass. In addition less glass going to landfill means that waste collection and disposal costs can be significantly reduced.

So next time you open a bottle of wine or finish up that jar of pasta sauce, remember glass bottles and jars aren’t rubbish, so rinse them out and recycle them at your local bottle bank.

To find out where your local bottle bank is, contact your local recycling officer on 01252 398164 (Rushmoor Borough Council) or 01252 622122 (Hart District Council).
