Landfill
Householders are encouraged to separate out their recyclables for kerbside collection, or to take them to recycling banks or household waste recycling centres.  Any rubbish that cannot be recycled is collected separately and transported by lorry to a landfill site.
At the landfill site, the rubbish is tipped out of the lorry into a big hole (usually a disused quarry). The waste is spread out and compressed into layers, and at the end of each day, the top layer is covered with soil.
Once the landfill site is full, it is capped with soil. Inside, the waste begins to bio-degrade creating methane gas. This gas is collected by a network of pipes and fed into an engine to create electricity.
The top layer of the landfill site can be planted and used for farming or parkland.
