Waste Facts
Household Waste Recycling Centres
There are 26 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) throughout Hampshire. These are places where people living locally can bring bulky household items and garden waste for recycling or disposal.
Old fridges, washing machines and furniture as well as newspapers, cardboard, plastic and glass bottles, cans, scrap metal and garden waste such as tree branches and grass cuttings can all be taken to the site. Staff will help with heavy items, if asked.
Some appliances are sold for spares. Wherever possible, anything brought to the site is recycled or reused. This helps to minimise the amount of waste that has to be taken away for disposal at a landfill site.
When old fridges that are no longer of use are brought to the site they are stored until they can be de-gassed. This is when the coolant gases (CFCs) are carefully removed by a trained person. They are sent to a specialist company for recycling.
