Workshop findings - an overview

The afternoon session broke into five workshop groups, which included trips to either the Material Recovery Facility in Portsmouth or the centralised composting facility at Chilbolton Down.

The other three groups discussed issues for about an hour, and presented their five key points for development at a plenary session.

The Integra approach to Waste Collection Systems
(two groups)

Group one:

  • Flexibility - housing type / socio-economic
  • Costs
  • Targets - legal framework
  • Infrastructure
  • politics

Group two:

  • Flexibility
  • WCA decision
  • "one stop shop" waste delivery point
  • Co-mingled and MRF
  • Service Plans

The Integra approach to Infrastructure Issues

  • The need to plan commercial / industrial waste into infrastructure
  • Need to establish waste volumes and long term infrastructure to meet waste volume changes
  • Delivery point location needs to relate to land use plan and implications
  • Need to investigate energy production from Energy Recovery Incineration / Combined Heat and Power opportunities.
  • Ability to impact municipal waste from 'other' authorities - control within the contract
  • Inclusion of waste collection contracts with the waste disposal contract

The Integra approach to Developing Contracts

  • Meeting the needs of the WCAs and WDAs through service planning exercises
  • Develop an open ended strategy that can be achieved
  • Cost (affordability)
  • Shared risks (capital costs / revenue)

Feedback and evaluation

Feedback from this event was very encouraging, with 80% of delegates responding to the questionnaire stating that they were satisfied or better, and 33% that they were totally satisfied.

90% of delegates found the venue and catering satisfactory or better, and 100% were satisfied with the presentations, with 50% totally satisfied. Everybody who completed the questionnaire was satisfied with the workshops, and 70% were very satisfied.

The overall presentation and mix, and Peter Jeffs’ talk, "Do you know your waste?" were picked out as particularly good. There were some negative comments such as a parking problem (1 delegate), slide text too small (1 delegate), two delegates found the presentations repetitive and one person commented that all the presenters were white males.

Everybody found the information provided before and during the event useful, with 83% finding it excellent during the event.

Delegates were asked which key lessons they were taking back to their organisation. Replies ranged from Partnerships, Communication, Publicity and Market building, to "Members need to be ready to meet additional costs", "Need a long term goal in mind", "Time, planning, commitment, resources are all very important".

Lessons delegates would like to get from the Beacons were: regional co-operation, mistakes that have been made, knowledge of their approach, problem solving initiatives, how to get joint working to work practically ie meetings etc, and operational practices.

Other learning opportunities mentioned were work shadowing, and documentation and report of the project. Details about our work shadowing programme can be found on the Beacon page of this web site, or by contacting Catherine Weaver on 01962 845593. Documentation and reports of the project can also be found on the web site, including many printed documents which have links from the "About Project Integra" page.
