Project Integra
was awarded Beacon
Council status for 2000-2001

Best practice
After a selective application process, the DETR (Department
of the Environment, Transport and the Regions) awarded some local authorities Beacon
Council status as examples of best practice, to share their experience with others.
- Project Integra - a countywide household
waste management partnership of the 14 local authorities within Hampshire, and the private
sector contractor Hampshire Waste Services.
- Integrated household waste management
involving action on all elements of the waste chain - production, collection, processing
and disposal - and an emphasis on the overall process rather then the discrete elements.
- Achievement of economic development
consistent with sustainable development through waste management.
During Project Integra's Beacon year, a
number of events were held:
Open days
Open Day One
The first open day, in Southampton on 23 May 2000 was about the
development of Project Integra, its achievements and challenges, with a
focus on how partnerships bring influence and economies of scale.
Open Day One presentations, workshop information and feedback
Open Day Two
The second open day in Fleet on 18 October 2000 was about locking
waste management into sustainable and economic development, concentrating on
waste as a resource. The event offered an opportunity to work with key people from all sectors involved
in waste and recycling. Guest speakers gave a multi-sector audience lots of ideas to
pursue during workshop sessions.
Open Day Two presentations and workshop outcomes
Open Day Three
A third open day was held on 7 March 2001 at The Guildhall,
Winchester. The title was Beating the Waste Targets.
The aim of the third open day was to follow on
from the issues raised by the previous two events, and to consider the future of waste
management. The focus was on action to move, then meet, the targets in the UK Waste
Strategy.
Open Day Three Addresses and Presentations
Work shadowing placements
As part of the Beacon programme work
shadowing placements, within the Integra partnership, were hosted in
February 2001. The structure of
these placements reflected the work of the 15 partners (including the
contractor),
activities across the whole waste stream, and the strategic/operational diversity of the
project.
IWM display
Integra representatives exhibited information
about Project Integra's integrated waste management strategy and Beacon status at the Integrated Wastes Management
exhibition in Torbay in June 2000.
